Local Activities
There are considerable differences between municipalities in crime. It is typical that in the majority of municipalities in Finland no robberies are committed at all during the year; instead, crime prevention measures should be tailored to the problems that are being faced. Effective measures for decreasing crime and improving safety tend to be local measures and it is possible to tailor them specifically to the local problems and to the factors that affect these problems.
The concept of
is presented in the National Crime Prevention Program. The goal is that local cooperative networks are established at least in the largest cities and local safety plans are drafted in all jurisdictional districts by the end of 2003.
The Ministry of Justice grants once a year financial support for local crime prevention projects. The support is intended for the start-up of projects, to facilitate launching local crime prevention and cooperation. Furthermore, financial support is granted for evaluations of the implemented projects.
